Rumour: Will Spider-Man Animated Movie Feature Miles Morales?

When it became known that Sony and Marvel were joining forces to reboot Spider-Man for the third time in less than 15 years, many fans and critics were calling out for Peter Parker to be left aside this time around.

In the comics, the mantle of Spider-Man has since been picked up by a new character, Miles Morales, and some felt the cinematic incarnation should follow suit.

This, of course, did not come to pass, as Tom Holland made his debut as the classic Spidey in this year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ and will take the spotlight fully in next year’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’

However, if a new report is to believed, we will indeed be seeing Miles Morales on the big screen - in the upcoming, as-yet untitled ‘Spider-Man’ animated movie.

Notorious comic book movie rumour-monger Umberto Gonzalez of Heroic Hollywood claims to have inside info that the Sony animated movie, to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (’The LEGO Movie’ ‘21/22 Jump Street’), will feature Morales instead of Parker.

There’s no official word to confirm this at present, although Gonzalez does point out that Sony chairman Tom Rothman has stated the animated movie “will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe.”

In other words, the film will not be canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which blows the doors wide open on what they’re able to do plot-wise.

A teenage science wiz in the mould of his predecessor, Morales was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, and made his comic book debut in 2011.

His introduction earned Marvel Comics considerable praise and publicity as a high profile mixed race superhero (half African-American, half Latin-American).

The character proved popular with fans, and has since been featured in animated TV series ‘Ultimate Spider-Man,’ plus various Marvel video games.

Many fans would agree they’re ready to see a different Spider-Man on the big screen - but, until we hear anything from Marvel or Sony themselves, best to take this news with a big pinch of salt.

The as-yet untitled Spider-Man animation opens in December 2018.
