Ruthie Henshall has claimed she didn't realise she was being recorded when talking about her intimate relationship with Prince Edward in the I'm A Celeb castle.

The theatre star, who was voted off the programme on Sunday, said on ITV's Lorraine on Monday that she didn't know microphones were picking up her conversation with fellow campmate Shane Richie.

She told host Lorraine Kelly: “It’s a long time ago. But there is a certain amount of it that you completely forget. It was my first day in there, I didn’t know that there were microphones everywhere.

"I know that sounds like a silly thing to say, but I really didn’t… so, the sort of fairly crass thing I said at the beginning, I said to make Shane laugh and had no idea that it would actually go out.

“But I learnt my lesson.”

The conversation arose when Richie spoke about "performing at the Palace", with Henshall retorting: "You performed in Buckingham Palace, you sang in the gardens, I s****ed in the bedrooms."

It comes after Henshall told Ant and Dec in her exit interview that she hadn’t intended to speak about the relationship.

The actor dated the Queen's youngest son for a time in the early 90s, meeting when the prince was a production assistant for Andrew Lloyd Webber.

She went to to remark how she had broken protocol when meeting the Queen as she shook her hand.

Henshall recalled: "He invited me to Windsor for the weekend and as we're walking I'm seeing a table outside and there's people sitting around it and I'm thinking: 'That looks like the Queen.'

"I remembered my dad had said to me that if you ever meet the Queen he said you curtsy and call her ma'am.

"But I grab her hand, forget all about the curtsy, and I'm like: 'I'm really, really pleased to meet you!'"

Henshall added that she had had drunkenly serenaded members of the Royal Family with a rendition of I Dreamed A Dream.
