Ryan Reynolds calls Logan an Oscar contender, why Deadpool is just as likely

Ryan Reynolds has boldly predicted that this time next year ‘Logan’ will be in Oscar contention.

Thanks to his position as Deadpool, the Canadian actor has already seen a healthy portion of the upcoming blockbuster. Clearly Ryan Reynolds was impressed with it, too, because when he was quizzed by Variety about the lack of Oscar nominations for comic-book movies he insisted that ‘Logan’ could buck that trend.

“’Logan’ looks like a movie that might break that glass ceiling. I know first-hand that it’s amazing. I’ve seen some of it. It’s mind blowing. It relies a lot on character,” Reynolds explained.

Ryan Reynolds’ own film ‘Deadpool’ is actually regarded as an Oscar outsider, as it has already been nominated for the Golden Globes’ Best Picture for a Musical or Comedy, while Ryan Reynolds is recognised in the Best Actor category.

20^th Century Fox have even sprung for an Oscar campaign, too. This has garnered some attention because of ‘Deadpool’s’ underdog story, which is summed up by the fact that Fox gave it just a $58 million budget and it went on to receive critical acclaim and gross $783.1 million.

Hugh Jackman believes that ‘Deadpool’ should be in Oscar contention, too, as he told Variety, “When I hosted the Oscars, ‘Batman’ (‘The Dark Knight’) didn’t get nominated, and everyone was talking about it. It’s a stretch to say these are injustices in life – we are happy and making movies. But I love it when someone like Ryan gets recognised. These big-budget or comic book movies are not easy to pull off.”

We’ll find out if ‘Deadpool’ can become the first comic-book movie to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination when they’re announced on Tuesday January 24, while we’ll see if ‘Logan’ has the credentials to be an Academy Award contender when it’s released on March 3.
