What happened to the cast of Dirty Dancing?

Those memorable lake lifts, a multi-million selling album, a pretty adult subplot that probably flew over the heads of its younger viewers and THAT famous line near the end. Yep, 'Dirty Dancing' is a bona fide iconic film.

Girls swayed to the vibrant dance sequences, choreographed by Kenny Ortega (who went on to have even more success directing the 'High School Musical' films), and swooned over Patrick Swayze, who of course played dance instructor Johnny Castle. Sadly, my own dance floor moves at the school disco didn't quite have the same effect on the ladies at the time. I'm not sure why. So, after having the time of their lives, what happened to the cast of the hit film? We took a look:

Jennifer Grey
Despite being in her twenties at the time, Grey perfected the role of the teenage adolescent in films like 'Red Dawn', 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and, of course, 'Dirty Dancing'. Grey played the brilliantly nicknamed Baby, a wallflower who rebels against her family by romancing a dance instructor during a summer vacation.

A nose job in the '90s made her almost unrecognisible — to the point where she briefly considered changing her stage name. Roles in films like 'Bounce' followed, but it's the small screen where she has featured most of late — including parts in 'House' and 'Friends', playing Mindy in the latter. She is to put on her dancing shoes again after agreeing to appear in the next US series of 'Dancing with the Stars'.

Patrick Swayze
It's hard to believe now, but Patrick Swayze wasn't first choice to play Johnny Castle. Actors like Val Kilmer and Billy Zane were considered, but an impressive audition landed him the part. While Swayze and Grey's onscreen chemistry was palpable, the pair didn't see eye to eye behind the scenes on both 'Red Dawn' and 'Dirty Dancing'. (Swayze was frustrated by her constant giggling during takes. Some of those incidents during the training scenes of the film actually made their way into the final cut).

He would of course seal his heartthrob status in 'Ghost' — before showing off his acting chops in 'Point Break' and a more diverse side to his talents in 'To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar' and 'Donnie Darko'. Sadly, Swayze died last year after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer.

Cynthia Rhodes
Small roles in 'Xanadu' and 'Flashdance' led to the dancer starring alongside John Travolta in 'Staying Alive', Sylvester Stallone's sequel to 'Saturday Night Fever'.
But it's 'Dirty Dancing' she is most famous for, playing Castle's dancing partner.
She quit acting after 'Curse of the Crystal Eye' in 1993, and settled into married life with musician Richard Marx. Rhodes' other notable screen credit is for an appearance in Toto's music video 'Rosanna'.

Lonny Price
When he wasn't busy tangling with Kermit and co in 'The Muppets Take Manhattan', Lonny Price would attempt to charm Jennifer Grey's Baby in 'Dirty Dancing'. Of course he would fail miserably. He has worked steadily since on the big and small screen, but his biggest successes have been on stage, directing several productions including 'Sweeney Todd' and 'A Class Act', which he also co-wrote and starred in. The play earned him a Tony Award nomination.

Jerry Orbach
The veteran stage and screen actor memorably played Baby's father in the 1987 movie. While he voiced Lumiere in 1991's 'Beauty and the Beast', it's from the small screen that you'll know Orbach best — whether it's the recurring role in 'Murder She Wrote', which led to a short lived spin-off, or 'Law & Order'. The latter's Detective Lennie Briscoe was a role that he played for 12 years before his death in 2004 from prostate cancer.

Kelly Bishop
The Tony award-winning actress was a huge hit on stage, but it took a while for her to gain screen success. She was earmarked for a smaller part in 'Dirty Dancing', but she was cast as Mrs Houseman — Baby's mother — after the original actress fell ill during the first week of shooting. It led to her playing the mum role in several other films, including 'Private Parts'. However, she is best known as the acid-tongued matriarch in the long-running US show 'Gilmore Girls'.

Max Cantor
As the sleazy holiday camp worker, Cantor's Robbie Gould dated Baby's sister, as well as getting Penny pregnant. He had had relatively few screen appearances before 'Dirty Dancing', but
appeared in several stage productions while at Harvard University.
Cantor also went on to star in 1989's 'Fear, Anxiety & Depression'.
However, his life was cut cruelly short after he became addicted to
heroin during research for a magazine piece in 'The Village Voice'. He died of a heroin overdose in 1991.

Jane Brucker
Jane Brucker had very little screen experience before 'Dirty Dancing' — with 'Miami Vice' her only credit. She did go to the same drama class as Bruce Willis, however. Despite her hugely amusing turn as Lisa Houseman in the movie, she never quite reached the same heights on the big screen and is now a full-time mother in LA.
