SAG Award Nominations Snub Hotly-Tipped Jennifer Lawrence and Will Smith

The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations have been announced, featuring surprise snubs for hotly-tipped performances from Jennifer Lawrence and Will Smith.

Despite already being talked up for Oscar nominations, awards darling Lawrence did not feature on the list for her performance in David O. Russell’s forthcoming biopic ‘Joy’, telling the story of Joy Mangano, the divorced single mum who invented the Miracle Mop.

And neither did Will Smith, whose performance in 'Concussion’, also a biopic, is being called one of the best of his career.

In it he plays Dr. Bennet Omalu, who took on the NFL after he discovered a link between repeated brain damage and the head injuries of American football players.

The SAGs, which take place on January 30, is the only awards show that honours only actors, and is voted for by fellow actors, members of the Screen Actor’s Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

There were also a wealth of other snubs, including another for both Matt Damon and Ridley Scott’s hit sci-fi 'The Martian’.

The best supporting actor category has confounded industry insiders too, omitting Sylvester Stallone in 'Creed’, Michael Keaton in 'Spotlight’ and Benicio del toro in 'Sicario’.

However, it does feature nods for Christian Bale in 'The Big Short’ and Michael Shannon in '99 Homes’, Mark Rylance in 'Bridge of Spies’ and Idris Elba in 'Beasts of No Nation’.

And oddly, despite it being a huge flop and panned mercilessly by critics, Nicole Kidman secured herself an Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV movie for her role as Grace Kelly in the derided ‘Grace of Monaco’.

Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming western 'The Hateful Eight’ has also been snubbed, but likely because sag voters were not sent preview screeners of the movie.

Helen Mirren has lead the field, however, with three nominations, one for lead actress in 'Woman in Gold’ and two (both ensemble and supporting actress) for her role in 'Trumbo’, which, surprisingly given such a strong field this year, is the movie which has the most nominations of all.

Starring Bryan Cranston – who’s nominated for best lead actor – it tells the story of the blacklisted hollywood screenwriter dalton trumbo.
