Bollywood star Salman Khan's latest movie Tiger 3 has set a new box office record with its huge opening.

The latest movie in the Tiger franchise has not only broken the record for the top-grossing Diwali Day release in the history of Hindi cinema but has also marked Khan's biggest ever opening day (via Deadline).

As part of producer Aditya Chopra's YRF Spy Universe, the film from Yash Raj Films grossed an estimated $6.3 million in India as well as $11.35 million globally across its opening weekend.

The film, which stars Katrina Kaif alongside Khan, officially opened on Diwali Day and the India gross recorded by Yash Raj on Sunday marked a record for the holiday. Breaking the record for the biggest opening day of the main franchise, Tiger 3 overtook previous titles 2012's Ek Tha Tiger and 2017's Tiger Zinda Hai.

Spinoffs in the series include the 2019 film War starring Hrithik Roshan, and this year's Shah Rukh Khan-led Pathaan which currently stands as the second biggest Hindi-language film of all time in India.

Grossing an estimated $2.25 million at the North American box office, Tiger 3 sees Khan take on the role of Indian spy Avinash Singh 'Tiger' Rathore once again.

In this outing, Tiger is framed as a traitor and must clear his own name as well as his family name going on a life-threatening crusade to do so. Actress Katrina Kaif also reprises her role as Zoya Humaimi, Tiger's wife and former ISI agent for the threequel.

Joining them in the cast is Emraan Hashmi, who stars as villain Aatish Rehman. Bringing back some big names from the franchise, Tiger 3 also features cameos from Shah Rukh Khan as Pathaan and Hrithik Roshan as Kabir from War.

Tiger 3 is out now in cinemas.
