Yahoo Movies Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway explain why 'Ocean's 8' was the safest film set they've been on
The cast members of Ocean’s 8 find it difficult to describe how the vibe on their film was different from other projects they’ve worked on. There aren’t many movies with eight female leads. As Sarah Paulson explained, “I have nothing to compare it to, it’s just sort of extraordinary and unique and rare.”
But there was one word that repeatedly came up when we sat down with five of the actresses from the new reboot of the George Clooney-lead trilogy (itself a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film, Ocean’s 11).
Safe.
“I didn’t realize how much I was craving the company of women,” said Anne Hathaway. “As a girl, I know how to hang out with the guys. I know how to hang out on that kind of set. But I was never on a set where I was the one who felt 100 percent safe.”
Said Sandra Bullock, who heads the Met Gala heisters as the recently paroled Debbie Ocean, sister of Clooney’s Danny Ocean: “I think it’s just eight human beings who are professionals who realized that they were in a safe place with people who wanted the best for each other.”
Awkwafina agreed: “That word comes up a lot, and it’s something that’s important when you work in a group setting — and one that I really think defined the atmosphere of the set.”
In 2018, the movie industry is grappling with countless accusations of sexual misconduct and harassment, suggesting that film sets have simply not been safe for women.
The set of the film, directed by Gary Ross, was a safe space, but it was also a fun place.
“We laughed hard so hard,” Hathaway said. “We laughed like idiots,” Awkwafina clarified.
“You went in every day, and you learned so much, because everyone really had their guards down,” said Mindy Kaling. “You could ask so many questions, like ‘Who’s your doctor?’ to ‘What was dating Matthew McConaughey like?'”
She played coy, but we’re pretty sure that second one was for Sandra Bullock.
Ocean’s 8 also stars Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. It opens Friday.
