Uh-oh - is that controversy we spy in the distance?

Deadline just broke the news that a big screen adaptation is planned of ‘Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself,’ the upcoming memoir of game designer Zoe Quinn - and Scarlett Johansson is said to be interested the leading role.

Quinn is the figure at the heart of the alarmingly still-ongoing ‘Gamergate,’ which sprang from a blog entry written by her ex-boyfriend, filled with unsavoury accusations about the ‘Depression Quest’ designer.

When the post went viral, an online hate campaign against Quinn ensued, rapidly snowballing into an ugly, large scale war of words between feminists and ‘men’s rights activists’ with many threats of violence involved.

‘Crash Override’ - also the name of Quinn’s anti-harassment website set up in the wake of Gamergate - will deal directly with the abuse she received, and the misogynistic underbelly of gaming culture which it exposed.

Amy Pascal (the former Sony Pictures boss who, following last year’s Sony e-mail hack scandal, is of course no stranger to online controversy herself) will produce the film, with Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum on screenplay duties.

Johansson, however, is by no means confirmed to star as Quinn; in a separate report, The Wrap emphasise she is “one of several young actresses who have their eye on the role.”

But given the great likelihood of the film attracting comment far and wide (particularly as Gamergate has not necessarily reached a conclusion just yet), the role of Zoe Quinn seems sure to be a highly coveted one.

No production or release dates for the film have been announced yet, but Quinn’s book ‘Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself’ is due to be published in September 2016.
