The rumour went that Scarlett Johansson didn’t get the lead role in ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ because she was deemed ‘too beautiful’.

The reality is… well, kind of the same thing.

In an interview with Howard Stern, the ‘Ghost In The Shell’ actress was asked directly whether that was the reason that director David Fincher gave the role to Rooney Mara back in 2011 and not her.

“Well, that’s not exactly how it went,” she said.

“What happened was, I remember having conversations with Fincher and he said, ‘You have to look like you’re totally uncaring of yourself, deprived…you’re fragile…’ I said, ‘I will, I can be this person!’ And he said ‘No, you can’t’.

“I really, really wanted that film because I felt I had something to contribute to it, but Fincher had a different vision for the character – and Rooney Mara’s so perfect in it.”

It’s not the only famous role she’s not bagged – but then she has been in the movie business since she was nine-years-old, so there’s bound to have been a few of those.

‘Jumanji’ in 1995 was one (that went to Kirsten Dunst), and the remake of ‘The Parent Trap’ in 1998 (that went to Lindsay Lohan) was another.

“I saw Jumanji. I liked it. I wasn’t bitter enough then, now I’m bitter,” she joked.

However, by the time ‘The Parent Trap’ came around, she added: “I started to get bitter… it was hard for me.”

She also crashed and burned in her audition for Anne Hathaway’s role as Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’.

“I auditioned and I had laryngitis… but I tried. I don’t know if that’s why I didn’t get it, I probably wasn’t right for it,” she said.
