On the Scene at the Golden Trailer Awards

Trailers typically precede movies and excite auds about coming attractions, but they were the main event at Friday night’s 15th annual Golden Trailer Awards, held at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.

The lengthy ceremony, honoring the best in motion pictured marketing, featured 17 of the 75 awards that were bestowed. Big winner Warner Bros. racked up a total of 15 prizes, including best thriller and best of show for “Gravity.”

Host Jay Mohr did his best to keep the crowd laughing throughout the evening and kicked off the ceremony by poking fun at some recent blockbusters.

“Tonight we’re honoring the people who in two and a half minutes convince everyone that the world needs another ‘Spider-Man’ movie,” Mohr joked.

“What a year for movies,” he continued. “Can you imagine if you were in a coma and you just woke up and you said ‘What’s going on?’ and I had to explain to you Harrison Ford is filming ‘Star Wars,’ George Clooney’s getting married and Bruce Jenner is Kanye West’s father-in-law? You’d be like ‘Holy shit! How long have I been out?’”

When his own voice failed to garner a sufficient chuckle, Mohr turned to the art of impersonation, channeling his inner Adam Sandler, Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken, Norm Macdonald, Russell Brand, Al Pacino and Dean Martin at various points in the evening.

Mixed martial artist Tito Ortiz was on hand to present the first award of the night for best action trailer to Lionsgate and Trailer Park’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Ortiz later joined “Dancing With the Stars” pro Karina Smirnoff to present best romance kudos to 20th Century Fox and Motive Creative’s “The Fault in Our Stars.”

Best animation went to Disney’s “Frozen,” and “Blackfish” was named best documentary trailer.

Actor Neal McDonough then took the stage to present the best comedy award to Focus Features and Mark Woolen & Associates’ “Bad Words.”

“Black Sails” thesp Zach McGowan introduced the Don LaFontaine award for best voice over, noting that “It was Don’s work in trailers that got me interested in doing it.”

“I love doing voice over work,” McGowan added. “I can do it with my shirt on, unlike TV where I’m lucky to get pants.”

Mohr returned to present the noms for the new category of best fantasy/adventure, which went to Disney’s “Maleficent,” and closed out the night by announcing “Gravity” as the winner of best of show.

Following the kudos fest, guests gathered outside the theater for the after party and sipped movie trailer-themed cocktails like the 22 Punch Street and Anchorman-garita.
