Scott Derrickson REALLY wanted to direct Doctor Strange

It seems Scott Derrickson went to great lengths to direct ‘Doctor Strange’.

During an interview with Be Entertainment, the Marvel director revealed that he spent an obscene amount of money in order to secure his dream job of directing ‘Doctor Strange’.

“I spent an extreme amount of money in creating my visual presentation to get this job,” he revealed. “I spent an obnoxious amount of my own money.”

The Marvel director - who eventually took the helm of ‘Doctor Strange’ - wouldn’t reveal exactly how much he spent.

But what did he spend it on?

“I did storyboards - I hired professional storyboard artists,” he explained. “I pre-wrote a 12-page scene in the movie and illustrated it completely and created my own concept art. [Then] I went in and did a 90-minute presentation that cost me a LOT of money.”

Of course, this is all pre-production work which would usually only begin once the director had landed the job. But Derrickson was so keen to take the helm of ‘Doctor Strange’ that he decided to hit the ground running.

Luckily, Marvel was rather keen to have him.

“The great thing was that when I got the job they had to buy it all off me,” he added. “Because one of the set pieces in the middle of the movie was one of the scenes that I wrote and they had to own everything, because a lot of it ended up being in the movie we made.”

“I got a lot of that money back,” he explained. “But I was committed, I was going to out-spend every competing director… I just knew that to get the job I had to show that I wanted it more than anyone.”

‘Doctor Strange’ stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. He’s joined by Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams.

Scott Derrickson directed the movie, based on a script he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill.

‘Doctor Strange’ heads to cinemas on 25 October 2016.
