Scream VI directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin have teased Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey's potential return to the slasher franchise.

Dempsey made his Scream debut as Detective Mark Kincaid in the threequel, and although he hasn't reprised the role since, the fifth instalment revealed that final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is now married to Mark and shares three children with him.

The directors have now confirmed that there were conversations about Dempsey returning to the role, with Bettinelli-Olpin telling Variety: "Yes, absolutely. There 100% was, and that would have been incredible."

Gillett, however, added that the conversations were only "preliminary" and Dempsey wasn't officially asked back.

But, given that Mark has been on the directors' minds, it's possible that we could see the character pop up again in future Scream films.

This, of course, would make more sense if Mark returned to Woodsboro with his wife, but Campbell didn't return for the newest instalment and her future in the franchise remains uncertain.

Campbell revealed the disappointing news in a statement last year, which read: "Sadly I won't be making the next Scream film. As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

While the actress was initially meant to feature in Scream VI, Gillett admitted that little needed to be changed to the script following her exit.

"Credit to the script, which was structurally solid and changed very little," he said. "There wasn't a huge pivot."

Scream VI is out now in cinemas.
