Scream VI has set a franchise record with its box office debut.

The sixth instalment of the slasher series, which opened this weekend, has raked in an impressive $44.5 million at the US box office as of Sunday (March 12) morning (via Deadline). This is the best opening of the entire Scream franchise.

Previously holding the record for the biggest domestic opening of the franchise, 2000's Scream 3 made $34.7 million during its box office debut.

The series's most recent outing, 2022's Scream, raked in $30 million stateside during its January opening weekend and eventually sailed past the $100 million mark at the global box office.

The latest Scream offering brought in $5.7 million during Thursday's previews, jumping up to $19.3 million on Friday and dipping slightly to $15.4 million on Saturday.

This puts the slasher ahead of Creed III at the US box office this weekend. The threequel film grossed $27.1 million during its second weekend out, according to Deadline.

Both Scream VI and Creed III easily surpassed the Sony sci-fi dinosaur movie 65, starring Adam Driver, which grossed $12.3 million during its box office debut in the US.

Scream VI saw our 2022 "requel" protagonists Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) leave Woodsboro relocating to New York City.

Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere was back as Kirby Reed, while Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers was the only original cast member to return following Neve Campbell's decision not to make a comeback.

Speaking of her decision, the Sidney Prescott actress said: "Sadly I won't be making the next Scream film.

"As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

Scream VI is out now in cinemas.
