Sean Penn Said To Be ‘Under Investigation’ After El Chapo Interview

Hollywood actor Sean Penn could find himself in a spot of bother after it emerged he met with fugitive druglord El Chapo over a potential movie being made about his life.

Penn wrote a piece for Rolling Stone that documented a series of meetings with the escaped convict named Joaquín Guzmán Loera. The secret meet ups took place while the criminal was on the run from Mexican authorities having already escaped jail twice before.

He was re-captured after members of Penn’s film cast and crew - although we’re not sure if Penn himself helped - led authorities to the wanted man, after Penn had met with and interviewed him.

But in a bizzare twist, it seems the ‘Mystic River’ actor has incriminate himself in the process. In the article he says, “There is no question in my mind but that DEA and the Mexican government are tracking our movements.”

He goes on to state how the pair communicated with ‘burner phones’ and there was “one per contact, one per day, destroy, burn, buy, balancing levels of encryption, mirroring through Blackphones, anonymous email addresses, unsent messages accessed in draft form.”

Penn goes on to recount the times he travelled to El Chapo’s secure jungle compound: “My mind is an instant flip book to the hundreds of pictures and news reports I had scoured.”

“There is no doubt this is the real deal. He’s wearing a casual patterned silk shirt, pressed black jeans, and he appears remarkably well-groomed and healthy for a man on the run.”

Yet a number of things still remain unclear.

Firstly, whether Penn approached Rolling Stone to write the piece or they asked him to do it, no one’s sure. Second, it’s a source in the Mexican government that claims Penn’s under investigation for the interview and secret meetings. And thirdly, what does this mean for a possible biopic movie going forward - is the content attained now part of a criminal investigation?

Whatever happens, we’ll likely hear a lot more on ‘El Chapo’ if/when any sort of production moves forward.
