Sebastian Stan has hit back at criticism of Marvel movies in a new interview.

The actor plays Bucky Barnes in various MCU films and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV show, and has come to the defence of the superhero series following a series of poorly-received instalments.

"It's become really convenient to pick on [Marvel films]. And that's fine. Everyone's got an opinion," he told Variety during a chat about his performance as Donald Trump in The Apprentice.

"But they're a big part of what contributes to this business and allows us to have smaller movies as well."

Stan shared his view that the MCU "feeds in so many more ways than people acknowledge" as part of a wider contribution to the industry.

"Sometimes I get protective of it because the intention is really f**king good. It's just f**king hard to make a good movie over and over again," he added.

Stan will be reprising his Marvel role in the upcoming Thunderbolts*, which sees a group of villains and morally grey heroes come together to undertake dangerous missions on behalf of the government.

He described Bucky's role in the movie as "kind of like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest – a guy coming into this group that was chaotic and degenerate, and somehow finding a way to unite them".

A recent trailer for Thunderbolts* revealed that the film's official title does indeed have an asterisk at the end.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said he won't be explaining what that means until after the movie's been released. One of the movie's stars, David Harbour, explained that he "can't say anymore", adding: "What can I say that's not going to get me in trouble?"

However, fans have been having plenty of fun speculating about what the asterisk could represent in the meantime.

Thunderbolts* is released in cinemas on May 2, 2025.
