Sega Game Shinobi Gets Movie Adaptation

Looks like ‘Tomb Raider’ isn’t the only video game property we can expect to see on the big screen in the not-too distant future.

The Wrap reports that a movie adaptation of ‘Shinobi,’ the hit action game originally released by Sega in 1987, is in the works via company Stories International.

The plan is that this will be the first of many big screen enterprises drawing from the back catalogue of the video games giant, as Stories International have obtained the rights to a slew of vintage Sega titles (which they may adapt for TV as well as film).

When the deal was initially announced in December 2014, other titles on the slate included ‘Golden Axe,’ ‘Altered Beast,’ ‘Streets of Rage,’ ‘Rise of Nightmares,’ ‘Crazy Taxi,’ and ‘Virtua Fighter.’

While these games might not be all that well-known among younger gamers, they were among the best-loved games out there when Sega were at the top of the arcade and console market in the 80s and 90s, before the company fell on harder times and downsized to concentrate on games alone.

Producer Marc Platt says, “We love the ‘Shinobi’ games and believe that the world of ninjas has never been properly explored onscreen. We now have the opportunity to do just that.

“With ‘Shinobi,’ we hope to make a film that honors the essence of the games and brings this fascinating world to life for moviegoing audiences.”

Originally released as an arcade game, ‘Shinobi’ was later released to the Sega Master System, home computers and PC, and in more recent years has been downloadable on the Wii and XBox 360.

It spawned upwards of 10 sequel games, most recently 2011′s ‘Shinobi 3D’ for the Nintendo 3DS.
