Selena Gomez has 'no regrets' about Emilia Pérez despite controversy
Selena Gomez has "no regrets" about her involvement in Emilia Pérez despite the controversy surrounding the film.
Since the Spanish-language crime musical received a staggering 13 Oscar nominations last month, the tide has turned against the film, with positive sentiment being matched by criticism of its depiction of Mexican cartels and transgender people.
The film suffered further damage to its awards campaign when past offensive tweets written by lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón resurfaced online and she offered half-apologies in her defiant responses.
During a Q&A at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in California on Sunday, Gomez admitted the controversy had taken the shine off its successful run, but insisted that she is still proud of the film.
"Some of the magic has disappeared," she said, reports Variety. "But I choose to continue to be proud of what I've done and I'm just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could."
She added that she was still grateful for the "special experience", saying, "The director (Jacques Audiard) just really trusted me, and I was so grateful because I've gotten to show people that I am capable of doing more. I hope this is just the beginning for me in this field."
Gomez, who received the Virtuosos Award at the festival, did not speak directly about Gascón, who was accused of racism and Islamophobia over her tweets.
In one resurfaced post, she also seemingly criticised Gomez and called her a "rich rat", however, the Spanish actress insisted that the tweet was fake and she "would never refer to her that way".
Audiard and Zoe Saldaña, who are up for Oscars alongside Gascón, have publicly distanced themselves from the star and denounced her alleged views. Gascón has since vowed to remain silent and not hurt the film's campaign any further.
While she didn't receive an Oscar nomination, Gomez is still up for a BAFTA. That awards show takes place in London on Sunday.
