The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman's hugely popular comic series Invincible will become a superhero blockbuster… thanks to Seth Rogen.

Seth Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg will dive once again into the comics genre to write, direct and produce an adaptation of Kirkman's Image Comics franchise (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Invincible is second only to The Walking Dead as Kirkman's longest-running comic, having launched as its own title all the way back in 2003. He partnered on the series with Cory Walker.

It's a coming-of-age story of a teenager named Mark Grayson, who struggles with the responsibility of one day following in the footsteps of his superhero father Omni-Man.

Announcing the upcoming superhero movie, Rogen and Goldberg joked: "No matter how much damage it causes our bodies, minds, and our most intimate relationships with those we love, we will not rest until Invincible is as great a movie as it deserves to be."

"For nearly a decade I've had to endure the 'what about Invincible?' question as fans have watched The Walking Dead grow into the multi-media monstrosity it has become over the years," Kirkman added. "The answer was always that we were waiting for the right team to partner with.

"That team has arrived! The esteemed misters Goldberg and Rogen have proven themselves to be top-notch directors with a keen collective eye for stunning visuals after slumming it by writing hit after juggernaut hit.

"Invincible's surprising, edgy, shocking, and oftentimes blood-soaked story couldn't be in more capable hands. With the team of Rogen, Goldberg and Universal, I'm very confident this will be another superhero movie, in a long line of superhero movies that continues to prove that it's a viable, thrilling genre that will keep people coming to the cinema for years to come."

Rogen has a mixed track record with the comic book genre. His version of the radio serial and Green Hornet was notoriously panned, but he's recently rebounded with the Preacher TV series.

On top of The Walking Dead, Kirkman has also turned his horror comic Outcast into a hit US TV series starring Philip Glenister as a troubled preacher bent on exercising the demons in the tortured Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit).
