Sex Education star Tanya Reynolds' new movie Timestalker has debuted with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by and starring Alice Lowe, the sci-fi rom-com follows "hapless heroine" Agnes through time as she "repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, gets reincarnated a century later, before meeting him again and starting the cycle anew".

The different historical periods Agnes finds herself reincarnated in include 1680s Western Scotland, 1790s rural England, 1980s Manhattan and an apocalyptic 22nd century.

Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones), Mike Wozniak (Taskmaster) and Aneurin Barnard (Peaky Blinders) also star alongside Lowe and Reynolds.

Timestalker premiered at SXSW on March 8, landing the highest possible score on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of writing) from seven reviews.

The first reviews have heaped praise on both Lowe's directorial and acting skills, as well as the film's subversion of typical rom-com tropes.

Here's what critics have been saying so far:

Collider

"To be frank, films are seldom like Timestalker. What Lowe accomplished in only her second full-length feature in roughly eight years shows such promise as a daring filmmaker with an original voice that deserves a megaphone, and I can only hope it doesn't take eight more to see what comes next."

Indie Wire

"Even on an indie budget, Lowe and her team credibly re-create some of history's most iconic eras (the miracle of the wigs in the pre-revolution France section deserves its own accolades alone), and by the time she zips way, way ahead in time, any smart producer will be throwing money at her for her next film. She can do anything."

Screen International

"Taking pleasure in subverting romcom tropes and boasting a satisfying attention to detail, Timestalker is a showcase for Lowe's considerable talents on both sides of the camera. While these have previously been on display in the likes of Prevenge (which premiered at Venice in 2016 and was also produced by Western Edge Pictures) and Ben Wheatley's Sightseers (in which she starred and co-wrote), Timestalker offers Lowe a broad canvas on which to blend comedy, horror and period pastiche."

Little White Lies

"The title of the film, Timestalker, may seem like a bit of a red herring in that it makes it sound like a time-travelling action-thriller from the 1980s, but, by its closing passages, it becomes clear that it is in fact the perfect encapsulation of Lowe's complex and purposefully inconclusive intentions."
