Shamima Begum: Illustrator banned from Etsy over Mother's Day card featuring ISIS bride

An illustrator has been banned from online marketplace Etsy over a Mother’s Day card featuring Islamic State bride Shamima Begum.

The card features an image of Ms Begum alongside the message: "Thanks for never joining ISIS".

The 19-year-old fled east London to join Islamic State in Syria as a schoolgirl in 2015.

She recently gave birth to a baby boy and has said she now wants to return to the UK in order to take care of him. Earlier this week it was revealed she had been stripped of her British citizenship.

The card was listed on Etsy by freelance illustrator artist Samuel Hague.

But he later posted a screen grab of an email on social media which read: "While Etsy encourages sellers to express their personal views and ideas in their listings, we do not permit items or listings that promote, support or glorify hatred.

"We also prohibit items that promote, support or glorify acts of physical or sexual violence against individuals or groups."

Mr Hague has previously been criticised for Mother's and Father's Day cards featuring Jimmy Savile, Josef Fritzl, Shannon Matthews and Katie Price's disabled son Harvey.

The Standard has contacted Etsy for further comment.
