Man arrested after fleeing store with a Christmas tree under each arm
A suspected shoplifter was arrested after being caught fleeing a supermarket with a Christmas tree under each arm.
At about 9.30pm on Monday officers were on foot patrol in Newcastle, when they spotted a man leaving the Morrisons supermarket.
The man caught the interest of police as he was spotted running from the store carrying two trees, leaving a trail of pine needles behind him.
He was immediately detained in the area of Byker - the setting for the long-running BBC children’s show Byker Grove - before officers visited the store and confirmed two Christmas trees had been stolen.
Presenting duo Ant and Dec - who are currently hosting I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here every night on ITV - first shot to fame in Byker Grove, and the show also spwaned stars including Donna Air and Jill Halfpenny.

David Appleby, 30, of Shipley Walk, Byker, was charged with theft in relation to the shoplifting at Morrisons and two further unrelated thefts.
He was released on bail ahead of a hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on December 22.
