Should The Jump Be Axed After Numerous Injuries?

Some viewers are calling for Channel 4′s dangerous show The Jump to be axed, as several celebrities have sustained pretty nasty injuries during this year’s competition.

The Wanted’s Tom Parker, who was crowned Snow Cross champion on last night’s show, and last year’s competitor Heather Mills have already been drafted in to replace Rebecca Adlington and Tina Hobley.

Rebecca was forced to pull out after dislocating her shoulder during Air Jump practice, while Tina’s experience came to end when she dislocated her elbow on the Ski Jump.

Beth Tweddle has now also reportedly quit the show after allegedly breaking her back when she crashed into a barrier on landing during training. She was airlifted to hospital in a neck brace after the incident.

In a statement, her parents said: “Yesterday [Saturday] Beth had a fall on the slopes whilst in training for The Jump. She is stable and due to undergo routine surgery on her back.

“Beth and the family would like to thank everyone for their good wishes. We will keep you updated on her progress.”

Linford Christie, meanwhile, was unable to take part in last night’s Snow Cross competition after sustaining a hamstring injury, although he vows he return to the show this weekend.

Sid Owen and Mark-Francis Vandelli were both injured during the live Snow Cross mayhem too, meaning their pre-recorded Air Jumps were used in the final jump-off, which eventually saw James ‘Arg’ Argent sent home.

Some viewers now think the show should be cancelled because the risk factor is so high, with one tweeting: “Terrible for Beth Tweddle to injure her back on The Jump after years as a competitive gymnast! Maybe it’s time for The Jump to stop now?”

One user said: “I really hope Beth Tweddle is going to be okay. The jump is such a stupid dangerous show & needs cancelled before more people get hurt.”

Another wrote: “Can channel 4 just cancel this god awful show please”.

The Independent report that in a statement, Channel 4 explained: “All events are planned with thorough health and safety procedures in place and the competitors safety is always of the upmost importance.

“There will always be an element of risk when competing in winter sports but all competitors undergo rigorous training and instruction with health and safety experts present. No competitor is cleared to take part unless the trainers deem their ability as proficient.”
