Showcase has announced which of its cinemas will be ready to welcome customers back when lockdown restrictions are lifted across some of England next week.

Joining Cardiff Nantgarw, which is already open, Showcase Cinema de Lux Southampton, Reading, Liverpool, Peterborough and Showcase Cinema Newham will also be welcoming film fans back to its screens from 2 December.

England will return to a regional tiered approach when the current lockdown ends on 2 December, but more areas will face tougher restrictions than under the previous regime. Indoor entertainment venues – such as cinemas, theatres, bowling alleys and casinos – will be allowed to stay open in Tier 1 and Tier 2 regions, but will remain closed in Tier 3 areas.

Once the national lockdown restrictions end on 2 December, more than 23 million people in England – 41.5% of the population – will be living under Tier 3 measures, where cinemas must remain closed.

Some of the films available at Showcase sites reopening next week include festive treat A Christmas Gift From Bob, Christopher Nolan’s summer hit Tenet, Liam Neeson action thriller Honest Thief, zombie sequel Train To Busan presents: Peninsula, and a number of festive hits such as Home Alone and Elf.

Superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984 will land on 16 December.

On the announcement Showcase Cinemas UK General Manager, Mark Barlow, said: “We are delighted that after today’s announcement we are able to open five locations in areas not classified as tier 3, and we look forward to welcoming back families, households and film fans to these cinemas.

“We are of course disappointed that our other cinemas have to remain closed due to the new restrictions in tier 3 areas, but we want to reassure our guests that we will reopen those cinemas as soon as we are able to. In the meantime, film fans all over the country can benefit from our Black Friday e-gift card offer and look forward to some upcoming blockbusters.”

The Showcase deal, available until 24 December, offers a bonus £5 gift card against every £25 spent. The bonus £5 is redeemable between 1 January and 31 March, 2021.
