Sigourney Weaver Insists Neill Blomkamp’s Aliens Sequel Will Be Made

With Ridley Scott at work on his ‘Prometheus’ sequel/’Alien’ prequel, ‘Alien: Covenant,’ there have been questions asked about the ‘Alien’ movie which Neill Blomkamp is lined up to direct.

Blomkamp’s would-be sequel is a revisionist film, which would follow on directly from James Cameron’s ‘Aliens,’ disregarding ‘Alien³’ and ‘Alien: Resurrection’ altogether.

Famously, the ‘District 9’ and ‘Elysium’ director - who met ‘Alien’ series star Sigourney Weaver on his last film, ‘Chappie’ - released his concept art for the film online in 2015, after studio 20th Century Fox initially turned it down. The wave of approval from fans bought it an almost-instant green light.

However, Ridley Scott’s plans for the franchise put Blomkamp’s film back in limbo, where some have suspected it may remain. But Weaver insists the project is definitely not dead.

Asked about Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ sequel at a recent public event (quotes via Aggressive Comix), the 66-year old actress says, “Well, I think it is [still on].

“Ridley asked Neill not to make our Alien til after Prometheus 2. He (Ridley) wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it.

“We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn’t do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together.

“So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

It’s also worth noting that Ridley Scott is on board Blomkamp’s film as a producer.

While story details have been thin on the ground, it is known that, in undoing the events of ‘Alien³’, this film will bring back Michael Biehn as Hicks, and cast a new actress as a grown-up Newt. (Original Newt actress Carrie Henn made her debut in ‘Aliens,’ and has never acted again.)

This, in turn, has led to speculation that the ‘Alien’ franchise might continue with Newt taking over from Weaver’s Ripley as the new series figurehead. (Of course, this was said about Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt in ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ and we all recall how that turned out.)

Either way, Blomkamp’s as-yet untitled ‘Alien’ sequel remains on hold for now - but Ridley Scott’s in-production ‘Alien: Covenant’ is due August 2017.
