Sigourney Weaver Slams Alien vs Predator

It seems that Sigourney Weaver isn’t exactly a fan of ‘Alien vs Predator’… and admits she felt ‘depressed’ when she heard about the movie.

Appearing at the London Film and Comic Con, the 65-year-old ‘Alien’ star was asked whether she wanted Ripley to be killed off at the end of ‘Alien 3’.

“Well, yes,” she said. “Because I heard that Fox was gonna do ‘Alien vs Predator’. Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.”

Of course, Ripley’s fate at the end of the ‘Alien’ trilogy seemed to ensure that Sigourney wouldn’t be back for any further instalments – showing Ripley hurl herself into a gigantic furnace to ensure the death of the Alien Queen which incubated inside her.

But then, we all know that wasn’t quite the end of the story…

After the success of ‘Alien 3’, Sigourney was eventually convinced to return for another sequel in 1997 – ‘Alien: Resurrection’. Seeing the return of Ripley after her apparent death, its attempt to revive the franchise left many fans wondering why the franchise had to be cloned at all.

Still, she remained unimpressed with ‘Alien vs Predator’.

“I’ve nothing against building a movie on a video game, but at the time, it was, as Jim Cameron said I think publicly, ‘Why would you want to do that?’” she added. “It’s like making Alien Meets the Wolfman.”

And it looks as though ‘Alien’ director Ridley Scott wasn’t so fussed either…

“In fact Ridley Scott was about to direct a third one, until this was announced, and he dropped out, because he also wanted to do an Alien sequel,” she said. “I think it caused more problems than it was worth.”

‘Alien vs Predator’ was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Grossing around $160 million at the box office, it wasn’t exactly the big success that everyone had hoped for… but that hasn’t stopped the ball rolling on another ‘Alien’ sequel.

And Sigourney seems a lot more enthusiastic about this one.

“I’m so excited about Neill,” she said, speaking about ‘Alien 5’ director Neill Blomkamp. “Because Neill is like you guys! He broke the tapes of these movies when he was a kid, he watched them so much.”

Neill Blomkamp recently released some new concept art from the upcoming project… and it’s already caused quite a stir. But Sigourney Weaver is happy to see Blomkamp take the helm.

“I love the fact that’s Neill’s fulfilling his childhood dream of what he hopes will be the popcorn movie, the Alien popcorn movie that he wanted as a kid to see.”
