It was something of a surprise when Sony announced that it was expanding its superhero universe in the lead-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming, announcing both Venom and Silver & Black spin-off movies.

Venom is the first stage in Sony's attempt to craft its own Marvel universe, distinct from the established Marvel Cinematic Universe that has produced Black Panther, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers and all the rest. Silver & Black was supposed to follow shortly after Venom, but it has been consistently delayed and may not even start production before Tom Hardy's symbiote hits our screens.

Here's everything we know so far about this female superhero team-up...

Silver & Black cast – will Felicity Jones return?

Black Cat did appear briefly in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 played by Rogue One's Felicity Jones. Known as Felicia Hardy, she was executive assistant to Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan).

However, since a third film in Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man trilogy never appeared, the chance of her returning doesn't look good and the role will almost certainly be re-cast for this new venture.

Beyond that, there is currently no official casting news for Silver & Black. According to unconfirmed reports, which are so far little more than rumours, Sony is eyeing actresses in the early-to-mid 20s for the lead roles.

Silver & Black director

The female-centric Spider-Man spin-off has done its best to recruit a mostly female line-up. Its director is Gina Prince-Bythewood, who made Beyond The Lights and directed the pilot for Marvel series Cloak & Dagger.

She's set to rework a script originated by Thor: The Dark World's Christopher Yost (one of the only male influences on Silver & Black so far). The team of writers who have worked on the project now includes Westworld's Lisa Joy, Captain Marvel's Nicole Perlman, Tomb Raider/Captain Marvel's Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Chaos Walking's Lindsey BeerLindsey Beer.

Silver & Black plot – how will these two characters unite?

With so little known about what a Silver & Black movie might explore, what we can look at is what the comic books tell us about these characters.

Black Cat is Felicia Hardy, a kind of less-villainous version of Catwoman who has the subconscious ability to affect probability fields, producing 'bad luck' for her enemies. She's kind of like a reverse-Domino, whose super power is good luck (we'd love to see these two meet!).

Silver Sable, whose real name is – naturally – Silver Sablinova, is the lesser-known of the two. She is a mercenary from the Eastern European country Symkaria, who also hunts war criminals.

Both characters have been allies and enemies of Spider-Man over the decades but they have been most popular as anti-heroes who pursue true villains outside the bounds of the law. There's also been romance between Black Cat and Peter Parker in the comics.

Some (as yet unconfirmed) reports have suggested Black Cat's work as a master thief may be the catalyst behind the storyline.

"Black Cat is a master thief and it's exactly that skill that puts things in motion in the film, as Hardy has stolen from the wrong people and now everyone, including Silver Sable, is out to get her."

"I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive," director Prince-Bythewood has said.

"Superhero movies have now transcended [the point] where they're no longer superhero movies per se; they are essentially genre movies. It's not so much that characters have a cape and fly. In Silver & Black, these two women are modern and cool... They may wear costumes, but [they're] very real and very grounded."

Silver & Black production

DC generated lots of buzz with its female-centric Gotham City Sirens – so we knew it wouldn't be long before Marvel followed suit. And Sony Pictures quickly revealed it was actively developing a team-up movie for these badass allies of Spider-Man.

Yet the story of Silver & Black's production is one of delays. According to director/writer Prince-Bythewood, there's no finished script yet, which is what's really holding things up.

In February 2018 she responded on Twitter to reports of more delays, saying: "Still working on the script. All about the script."

Silver & Black release date

Spider-Man spinoff movie Venom is now on the horizon, landing in UK cinemas in October, but its female-led follow-on won't be with us for a while. Originally planned for a February 8, 2019 release in the US, Silver & Black was first delayed 'indefinitely' and has since been pulled entirely from Sony's release slate.

A new rumour suggests it is unlikely to go into production until 2019.

Silver & Black trailer

No film in the can yet means no trailer to feast our eyes on. Let's hope Sony can get this production rolling ASAP and show us some amazing footage. Summer 2020 is the best guess for advance footage.
