Simon Kinberg Talks Potential X-Men, Deadpool & Gambit Crossover

Simon Kinberg, overseer of all 20th Century Fox’s comic book properties, has said he has a “clear sense of the directions” he wants to take each of his properties and how a cross-over could potentially occur.

Interestingly, but perhaps obviously now, Kinberg made no mention at all of ‘Fantastic Four’ - instead focusing on 'X-Men’, 'Deadpool’ and 'Gambit’.

“The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after ’Days of Future Past’ in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from ’X1,’ ’2,’ ’3,’ everything from ’Days of Future Past’ forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon,“ he told MTV at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"So the ’Gambit’ movie, the ’Deadpool’ movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in ’Days of Future Past’ and moving forward. Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules… There will be interplay between different characters in different movies.”

The characters of Deadpool and Gambit cross-over much more easily into the world of X-Men given both characters originated from those series. This means there won’t be nearly as much fan-fare as if a successful 'Fantastic Four’ series had crossed over, even less so given both Gambit and Deadpool appeared in the since-retconned 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ spin-off.

Kinberg also spoke about the grand plan for future movies, explaining: "I don’t have it up on a wall, but I have it on my computer, and I have it sort of tattooed on my brain now too… Nothing external, so that if I get knocked over the head, no one can read it. It’s literally behind my eyelids. But yeah, we have a clear sense of the directions we want to take them in and in my my mind at least, how we could start to cross-pollinate sort of with those characters that have their standalone movies.”

'Deadpool’, starring Ryan Reynolds, will be released on 5 February 2016, 'X-Men: Apocalypse’, starring Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, will be released on 19 May 2016 and 'Gambit’, starring Channing Tatum, will be released on 7 October 2016.
