He said: "I mean, listen, if something like that comes my way, sure. I’d just treat it the same way: I’d read it, see who’s directing. Do they want me? Cool. Let’s chat. Is the script belting? Then cool, let’s definitely chat.
"It’s not something that I’m going to turn my nose up at. I’m sure there’s a long, long list. I’m sure that list is highly competitive, and I’m sure that there are some phenomenal actors being considered for it. If I’m somewhere along that list – brilliant. That in itself is an achievement."
He continued: "But, again, a lot of that stuff – as you find with quite a lot in this industry – is out of my hands. You just roll with the punches."
O’Connell played James Cook in the third and fourth series of Skins, and his latest project is the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black.

In the new film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Industry’s Marisa Abela will take on the role of the legendary singer, while O’Connell plays Amy’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil.
The impressive cast also includes The Power’s Eddie Marsan who plays Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse, with The Crown’s Lesley Manville as her grandmother Cynthia.
Back to Black’s official synopsis says that the film will "focus on Amy’s extraordinary genius. Creativity and honesty that infused everything she did.
"A journey that took her from the craziness and colour of ‘90s Camden High Street to global adoration – and back again, Back to Black crashes through the looking glass of celebrity to watch this journey from behind the mirror, to see what Amy saw, to feel what she felt."
Back to Black is set to be released in the UK and Ireland cinemas on April 12.
