Snowfall's Angela Lewis teases "stumbles" and what to expect from season 4

From Digital Spy

Snowfall, created by John Singleton, Eric Amadio and Dave Andron, follows the crack crisis and resulting gang wars in 1980s South Central LA through the eyes of drug kingpin Franklin Saint (Damson Idris) and his growing empire.

Set in the spring of 1985, season 4 casts a shadow over the once peaceful LA. With the re-election of Ronald Reagan, an increased demand for crack rock, burgeoning gang wars and LAPD resources focusing on the 'war on drugs', Franklin's drug business and the strong handle he once had on it, is beginning to fall apart.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, we sat down with Angela Lewis, who plays Aunt Louie, to discuss season 4 and the damage the drugs are doing to the people and the place they love.

If you haven't caught up with the end of Snowfall season 3, then look away now.

In the first episode of season four, it's clear that your character Aunt Louie has stepped up her game – she's got her own club now and she plays more of an important role to Franklin. What else can we expect to see from her in season four?

Well, at the same time that she has more power and more influence over Franklin, and has demonstrated the ability to take the reins while Franklin has been out and injured – he's back now. And so, we're just watching to see how she is going to handle that. What is she gonna do? I think that's been really fun.

I love the relationship that Jerome (Amin Joseph) and Louie have, and in the season three finale we saw a glimpse of what would have been – and I think you were actually pregnant in that scene – do you think Louie and Jerome will get their happy ending at all?

Yeah, I was [pregnant]. It wouldn't be drama if [there] were happy endings, and we talked about that with the showrunner a lot. I think what's important is that we see the love between Louie and Jerome and you know they are really ride or die for each other, but there's no way this is going to be. I don't know if the ending is going to be happy or not, but I know the road to wherever they're going is going to be full of rocks and stumbles.

Louie is very tough, but we don't actually know that much about her. Will we get to see more of her history at some point?

I hope so, because Louie has got a lot of history. She's got a lot of things that are underneath the surface that drive her, that make her super sensitive and vulnerable, which is why she has such a tough shell. And, at the same time, that same history is the thing that propels her forward so I hope we get to peek into that a little more.

It seems that Franklin no longer has the command he once had, and some of the other key characters like Leon (Isaiah John) and Manboy (Melvin Gregg) don’t view him in the same way as before he got shot. How will Franklin regain his power?

I think season four is all about that, watching [Franklin] pick those pieces up from not only being shot but the choices that led up to that. He definitely had some obstacles.

For Louie, I think she would not have agreed with every decision that he made in the last season and even in season four, so we're gonna definitely be watching him pick up those pieces and try to get himself, get that swagger back.

At the end of season three, and in the first couple of episodes of season four, we've started to see the real effects the crack crisis has had in South Central LA, as well as the beginnings of the gang war. How will that play out for everyone?

You can't witness extreme destruction like that without it affecting you in some way. So, we're definitely watching the effects that the breakdown of the community has on the characters as individuals and also on their relationships with each other and with the world at large. It’s going to be really, really, really interesting. I think for the viewers it'll hit home a lot how the characters deal with seeing some of these breakdowns.

And do you think Franklin is in over his head playing both sides with Skully (De'aundre Bonds) and Manboy?

(Laughs) Angela's answer is yes! Louie's answer, I'm not gonna say, because I definitely think it comes out in this season.

We've been introduced to a new character, journalist Irene Abe (Suzy Nakamura), and she has already started to dig into the goings-on in South Central LA, including Franklin. How will Irene shake things up?

Irene is smart, and she knows a lot, and I think the more a person knows about a given situation, the more dangerous it becomes not only for Irene but for [the Saints], and for other powers-that-be. She's got her work cut out for her. It's crazy.

Snowfall airs on FX and Hulu in the US. Seasons 1-3 are available to watch in the UK on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer.
