Boutella responds to harsh Rebel Moon reviews Netflix

Rebel Moon star Sofia Boutella has reacted to the movie's brutal reviews, admitting it was "hard to see something being demolished to that extent".

The first chapter of Zack Snyder's two-part sci-fi movie series debuted on Netflix over Christmas, with Boutella taking the lead role of warrior Kora, who recruits others from across the galaxy to take on the imperial Motherworld.

However, critics were less than enthusiastic about the movie, with the film currently standing at 21% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

"I always thought that I was fully armed to take on those punches, and then I read the critics that came down on Rebel Moon and it really affected me," Boutella told Vulture.

"And I’m just gonna be honest about it. I feel like I’m carrying it for everybody that cared so much about this project, and that’s what affected me. Not the way I look. If anything, I’ve been pretty lucky and people like my work in it, but the movie was criticized.

"It really affected me for all of those who put so much heart, tears, and sweat in this project," the star continued. "It’s hard to see something being demolished to that extent."

However, Boutella said she is "proud to have been part of it", adding: "And if there is no more Rebel Moon, it will be a very important part of my life that I will defend forever."

Rebel Moon is set to continue with a sequel due out on April 19, the actress previously teasing to Digital Spy that fans will get more "context" to the characters in the follow-up.

"What I can say is that we'll get more context, and we will get to go individually, with each and every character, deeper, to get to know them," she said.

"Most of the characters are really well-defined. You'll get a backstory. That's what I can say. You'll get to really get to know them, and why they are the way they are. The whole group will get to know them deeper. And more context, essentially."

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is available to watch now on Netflix. Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver is released on Netflix on April 19.
