Thanks to widespread hysteria from fans, Sonic the Hedgehog got a drastic redesign for his upcoming live-action(?) movie – but recently-released images have now revealed another new look for the character.

There's no need to angrily whack your computer screen or lob your phone in a river, though, because they haven't actually tampered with his perfectly-adequate latest look.

Instead, a new TV spot in Hungary has shown the blue speedster looking all fluffed up, as if he'd just been put through a car wash.

Images of Sonic's fluffy new do have since been circulating on social media, and now fans wish they had Hungarian TV.

The movie was delayed from late 2019 to early 2020 so the visual effects team could create a new character model for Sonic, after fans had a very negative reaction to the strange blend of realism and cartoony features. The new, more stylised model received a much better reception.

But Jim Carrey, who stars as villain Doctor Robotnik in the film, wasn't that convinced that fans should have been able to have a say in the movie. "I don't know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it, while it's happening," he said.

"Sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, it goes, 'OK, I don't want it'."

Would usually agree with you, Jim, but the fans are definitely right on this one.

Sonic the Hedgehog will arrive in cinemas on February 14, 2020.
