Sonic the Hedgehog star Ben Schwartz has provided fans with a big update on the progress of the upcoming sequel, dropping the news that filming will begin soon.

Although Schwartz, who voices the speedy blue hedgehog, doesn't have any exact dates to give us yet, he also revealed that the script is finished and it's "awesome".

"I know that the sequel's happening, and they're gonna start filming soon," he told ComicBook.com. "But because I'm the voice behind a speaker, I don't know any exact dates or anything like that. But I'm excited, I read the script and it's awesome."

After Sonic the Hedgehog, which is based on the classic video game, was released early last year, it went on to become the fifth biggest movie of 2020 in box office terms and a sequel was officially put into development in May 2020, with director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller all back on board.

Schwartz will of course be back as Sonic, as will James Marsden as sheriff Thomas Michael 'Tom' Wachowski. We'd also expect Jim Carrey to return as mad scientist Dr Robotnik, as well as Tika Sumpter as Tom's wife Maddie.

The first movie also ended with a surprise cameo in the credits, as we saw a ring portal open up in Green Hills which Sonic's best friend Tails jumped out of, searching for Sonic.

With the introduction of Tails, it looks like the sequel could see the pair teaming up to defeat Dr Robotnik – something we are absolutely ready to see.

Director Fowler told Digital Spy that he wanted to include Tails in the next movie in order to open up the Sonic world, saying that there are "so many great characters" to feature.

"[Tails] was just a way of saying to the fans, 'Look guys, we love these characters, too. We might not have been able to include them in this story, but we would love to include them in future stories'."

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is due for release on April 8, 2022.
