Sonic the Hedgehog was the rare video game movie that actually became a critical and commercial success, which is crazy to think considering the intense backlash to the reveal of the original CGI design for the titular hero.
A sequel didn't take long to go into the works, and now the official title has been revealed: Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The franchise's snarky official Twitter account made fun of the unoriginal title while announcing the news on Wednesday (February 10), jokingly calling it: "Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious."
Of course, this is also the title of the second game in the series too, the one that introduced Miles 'Tails' Prower as a playable character.
Tails showed up in the credits of the first film, and it seems as though he could have a big part in the sequel as his tails make up the number two in the logo.
That probably does mean that we're going to wait until Sonic the Hedgehog 3 until we get Knuckles, but we'll have to wait and see.
Sonic's movie voice actor Ben Schwartz recently confirmed that the script from the sequel is finished and filming is expected to begin soon.
"I know that the sequel's happening, and they're gonna start filming soon. But because I'm the voice behind a speaker, I don't know any exact dates or anything like that. But I'm excited, I read the script and it's awesome," he recently told ComicBook.com.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is due for release on April 8, 2022.
