"Sony, New Regency and Ubisoft have announced a film adaptation of videogame ‘Watch_Dogs’.

They made the announcement last night at a Sony press conference taking place at this week’s GamesCom trade event in Germany.

It is just the latest in a string of announcements based on Ubisoft properties. Movie adaptations of the successful ‘Assassin’s Creed, ‘Splinter Cell’ and ‘Ghost Recon’ franchises are also in the works.

Columbia Pictures’ president of production, Hannah Minghella said: “The themes and open gameplay of ‘Watch_Dogs’ lends itself perfectly to the big screen. The game has intense action and adventure, but the story focuses on information and the control of information, which we think will lead to an exciting thriller.”

‘Watch_Dogs’ sees players control a man, out for revenge, who can hack into the city of Chicago’s technological infrastructure on the fly – meaning he can, among other things, tinker with traffic lights, view security camera footage and hack people’s phones.

French company Ubisoft set up a motion picture wing in 2011, with many of its planned films still in development. They do have big stars reportedly attached however, with Michael Fassbender rumoured to star in ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and Tom Hardy a possibility for ‘Splinter Cell’

‘Watch_Dogs’ is out November 22 on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U.
