Daniel Craig Dropped For Dragon Tattoo Series Reboot

Four years on from the David Fincher-directed English language version of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,’ Sony have announced plans to revive the series by going back to square one.

Happily though, the plan is not to remake the first novel in the late Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, but rather to film ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web,’ a fourth novel about hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist, written by David Lagercrantz.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, neither David Fincher nor stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara will be involved, and the film will be a fresh take on the property after the 2011 movie did not meet commercial expectations.

However, the earlier film’s producer Scott Rudin is on board along with fellow producers Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon. The only other name officially linked to the film at present is British screenwriter Steven Knight, who is reportedly in talks to adapt the novel.

It is also reported by The Wrap that the top choice to replace Mara as Lisbeth Salander is Alicia Vikander, a rising star after her roles in ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘The Man From UNCLE.’

If ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ proves a bigger hit than David Fincher’s film, then hopes are reportedly high that adaptations of the other two Larsson novels ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’ and ‘The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest’ will follow.

A key consideration in this will be keeping the budget considerably lower than ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’, which cost $90 million (£58.5 million) to make and grossed $233 million (£151.4 million) worldwide.

All three of the original Lisbeth Salander novels were previously shot in Larsson’s native Sweden in 2009, with Noomi Rapace in the lead.
