BAFTAs 2016 Nominations Biggest Shocks: SPECTRE Completely Snubbed

The nominations for the 2016 BAFTAs have been announced and it seems like one of the biggest British films of 2015 has been completely overlooked.

‘SPECTRE’, the 24th James Bond film, made £94m at the UK box office alone but it failed to receive a single nomination from the British Academy even in any of the technical categories. In contrast, 2012’s ‘Skyfall’ received 8 nominations winning Outstanding British Film and Best Original Music, while ‘Casino Royale’ landed 8 nods winning Best Sound.

This means ‘SPECTRE’ stands alongside ‘Quantum of Solace’ in terms of total BAFTA nominations with zero. ‘Suffragette’, the lavish biopic about the women’s rights movement has also stalled as an awards contender picking up no nominations.

On the acting front Tom Hardy has been largely ignored despite amazing performances in ‘Legend’, ‘Mad Max Fury Road’, and ‘The Revenant’, and despite rumblings of a career-best turn from Johnny Depp in ‘Black Mass’, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star has been snubbed.

Other big names left off the list include Jennifer Lawrence for ‘Joy’ and Sylvester Stallone for ‘Creed’. The ‘Rocky’ star is up for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes this weekend and is a strong contender to pick an Oscar nod for his reprisal of the ageing pugilist in Ryan Coogler’s superb franchise refresh, but Stallone’s BAFTA chances have suffered a TKO.

We’d also love to have seen 9-year-old Jacob Tremblay pick up a Best Actor nomination for the supremely moving ‘Room’ as the whole movie hinges on his incredible natural performance. Perhaps his time will come at the Oscars.

Elsewhere, ‘The Martian’ failed to pick up a Best Film nomination despite Sir Ridley Scott being nominated for Best Director, while ‘Spotlight’ director Tom McCarthy was been overlooked despite being a favourite to pick up an Oscar at the Academy Awards.

And it looks like the Best Picture momentum for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ seems to have run out of guzzolene with the film picking up an amazing seven nominations, but all in technical categories.

The EE British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 14 February.
