Spider-Man stars Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are teasing fans on social media with fake titles for the forthcoming sequel.

Last night (23 February), the actors shared conflicting title cards for Spider-Man 3, each riffing off titles of the previous films in the franchise (Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Holland – who stars as Spider-Man in the franchise– shared a post on Instagram apparently revealing that the film will be titled Spider-Man: Phone Home, which is also a reference to the popular line from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 hit E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

“So excited to announce the new Spider-Man title. Can’t wait for you lot to see what we have been up to. Love from Atlanta,” wrote the 24-year-old.

Zendaya (who portrays Michelle “MJ” Jones) joined in on the joke with her own Instagram post telling her followers that the third instalment would, in fact, be titled Spider-Man: Home Slice.

Meanwhile, Batalon (who plays Ned Leeds) shared a title card that reads: Spider-Man: Home Wrecker. He captioned the post: “We’re so excited to share the TITLE of our new movie!!”

Fans of the franchise were initially confused by the joke. One user commented on Holland’s post: “Ima pretend that ain’t the title”, while another asked: “Is that really the title of the film?”

A third user added: “Really running out of Spider-Man titles aren’t ya?” Others were more skeptical of the apparent titles, writing: “No way this is real…”.

The three actors have yet to comment further on the social media stunt.

Although the title cards are most likely fake, fans have speculated that they could contain hints of the multiverse concept that is rumoured to be introduced into the franchise.

It could also just be that the actors spotted fans desperate for news as to the actual title of the film, and decided to have some fun.

Days before the trolling, six possible titles for the film were registered as domains online.

Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to be released in December 2021.
