Spider-Man Spin-Off: Drew Goddard Still Hopes To Make Sinister Six

It’s no secret that Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ plans have seemingly gone up in smoke… but it looks as though writer Drew Goddard still hopes to bring his Spider-Man spin-off to the big screen.

During an interview with IGN, the 40-year-old filmmaker revealed that while Spider-Man is now going to be part of Marvel’s big screen roster, he still hopes that there’s a place for his ‘Sinister Six’ movie.

“It’s a long game,” he said. “It could still happen. It’s certainly not going to happen soon… but I’ve learned, look, Cabin in the Woods, we went into bankruptcy and had to stay on the shelf for a couple of years. It’s OK.”

Of course, the ground-breaking deal between Sony and Marvel Studios means that the world of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and all its planned sequels and spin-offs is essentially no more with the character being completely rebooted.

Set to appear in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, this all-new Spider-man – played by newcomer Tom Holland – will place Peter Parker back in high school. And it seems that these big new plans have put a dampener on Goddard’s ‘Sinister Six’ movie.

“For me, the making of it is the special part,” he said. “Then after that it’s the business part. Like, I want people to see these things, but it’s done. And with Sinister, you know I love that script, it was really fun. I love the artist I was working with. I’d love to make that movie someday. But if we don’t? I still got to write it. I still got to do it. And you can’t take that away from me, man.”

Unfortunately, Goddard wouldn’t reveal which iconic ‘Spider-Man’ villains he’d chosen to appear in the movie… but he did reveal that it wouldn’t be a straight six-on-one version of a regular ‘Spider-Man’ film.

“When you’re doing just a straightforward superhero movie, you don’t need a lot of villains,” he said. “The focus is on one guy. I think with Sinister, it’s different. To me it’s less about too many villains and more about too many antagonists and there’s a distinction.”

“You never say, like, The Dirty Dozen has too many characters,” he added. “They’re all villains, or you could argue that. But they’re protagonists. The trick with Sinister, is that I was making everyone the protagonist and less about six-on-one and more about coming at it a little differently. That was the idea.”

Of course, it sounds as though Goddard’s ‘Sinister Six’ had a lot in common with DC’s own super-villain-focussed movie, ‘Suicide Squad’. But unlike its DC counterpart, it looks as though ‘Sinister Six’ won’t be heading to cinemas anytime soon.

Will it ever make it to the big screen? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but I’m guessing it would require some serious talks between Marvel and Sony.
