St Thomas' Hospital incident: Westminster Bridge closed after security alert at central London hospital

Armed police descended on central London this morning after a security alert at St Thomas' hospital.

Westminster Bridge was sealed off and other nearby roads closed following the incident.

Lambeth Police said officers were called to the hospital following reports of threats being made by a man.

An hour later, it said the incident was being stood down and the cordon was being removed.

Eyewitnesses had described armed police at the scene and said members of the public had been moved away from the area.

"St Thomas’ hospital with armed police attending. No entry to anyone," one witness said on Twitter.

"Now clearing the grounds in front - everyone pushed back out to Westminster Bridge."

Lambeth Police said no arrests have been made.

Officers tweeted: "Police were called at 9.18am to St Thomas’ Hospital SE1 following a report of threats made by a male. No weapons were seen. Armed officers attended.

"Local road closures were put in place. The hospital was not evacuated.

"Officers subsequently located and spoke to a male inside the hospital. The incident was stood down at approximately 10.30am.

"There have been no arrests. This was not treated as a terrorism incident."
