Star trek star 'Scotty' to have ashes shot into deep space

The ashes of 'Star Trek' legend James Doohan, who famously played Scotty in the long-running series, are to be fired into deep space.

He will be joined by 'Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry, his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry, who appeared on the show as the voice of the ship's computer and as Lwaxana Troi on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and author Arthur C. Clarke.

Houston-based company Celestis, which has been sending remains into space for 16 years, will launch the consignment from Cape Cod in November, 2014.

This will be the first to launch into deep space, with the craft containing the stars orbiting the sun between the Earth and Venus.

Some of both Roddenberry's and Doohan's remains have previously boarded Celestis flights, but not into deep space, with this project using an experimental 'solar sail', which will find the craft propelled by protons from the sun.
