Yahoo Movies Star Trek: Discovery’s Final Season Is ‘Dependent on a Very Significant Star Trek Easter Egg,’ Says EP
Star Trek: Discovery is looking back — way back — as the titular crew embarks on one last mission.
The Paramount+ show’s fifth and final season, premiering Thursday, April 4, will feature a major nod to Star Trek lore that executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtxman says sets the whole final journey in motion.

“If you’re going to tie the show to Star Trek, there has to be a really good reason for it. Easter eggs can backfire frequently and feel like they’re achieving the opposite of your intention, which is that it’s there to pay lip service to something but it’s actually not substantive,” he tells TVLine.
“In this particular case, the whole season is dependent on a very significant Star Trek Easter egg that you’ll find out at the end of the first episode,” Kurtzman notes. “It sheds some light on things that happened in the past, but it also paves the way for where we go for the rest of the season.”
The farewell run finds Captain Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well… dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
Newcomers this season include Callum Keith Rennie (The Umbrella Academy) as Rayner, a “gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew;” Eve Harlow (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Moll, a former courier-turned-outlaw equipped with an impressive strategic mind and a sharp wit; and Elias Toufexis (Shadowhunters) as L’ak, who is “impulsive and fiercely protective” of his partner Moll.
Kurtzman executive-produces and serves as co-showrunner alongside Michelle Paradise.
