Star Wars 9 Director Wants To Film In Space

It looks as though ‘Star Wars’ might be heading to a galaxy far closer to home…

Colin Trevorrow - director of the upcoming ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ – has revealed that he’s already asked Lucasfilm and Disney about the possibility of filming in space.

“I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars’,” he said. “I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but they’ve shot IMAX in space!”

Of course, IMAX has already made several space-related features – notably, ‘Hubble 3D’. But this would be the first time that ‘Star Wars’ has actually headed into space.

Colin Trevorrow also confirmed that, like ‘The Force Awakens’, his upcoming ‘Star Wars’ sequel will be shooting on film rather than digitally – a format which seems to be shared by ‘Star Wars 8’ director, Rian Johnson.

“Film tends to remind us of our memories, of our childhoods,” he said. “The way we used to see films.”

It’s certainly a good enough reason to shoot on film – after all, recapturing the magic of the original movies seems to be one of the major goals for the ‘Star Wars’ sequels.

And it’s a medium Trevorrow is familiar with, after shooting ‘Jurassic World’ on film.

The 39-year-old director said that period films, for example, are the kinds of films which he could never produce if they were being made digitally.

“The only place where I tend to not be able to attach myself entirely to something shot digitally is when that’s a period film,” he said. “There’s something in my brain that immediately says, ‘Well, they didn’t have video cameras then’.”

And he jokingly added that this is why ‘Star Wars 9’ will be shot on film, too.

“I could never shoot Star Wars on anything but [film] because it’s a period film,” he said. “It happened a long time ago…”

But if Trevorrow gets his way, it won’t be a galaxy far, far away.

‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ heads to cinemas in 2019.
