Star Wars Characters That Could Return In Rogue One Spin-Off

A fourth ‘Star Wars’ prequel is on its way, but don’t worry, it’s shaping up pretty well. Welsh director Gareth Edwards’ 'Rogue One’ will tell the story of how the Rebels acquired the plans for the original Death Star.

It takes place shortly before the events of 'A New Hope’ and will inform the events of that movie, so naturally there’s a lot of scope for returning characters. Here are a few possibilities.

Darth Vader

'Rogue One’ won’t include any Jedi, Edwards said in April “The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie”, but it could certainly include the dark side’s most famous pupil.

The marketing team behind the film would certainly love to be able to slap Darth Vader on the movie’s posters, but would he fit into a story that we know will be more grounded than the mainline films?

We know 'Rogue One’ will focus more of the war part of 'Star Wars’ - so maybe we could see Vader on the battlefield; cooly and calmly wiping out Rebel scum with ease.

Grand Moff Tarkin

Peter Cushing’s short-lived villain from 'A New Hope’ is well poised for a return, but given the age of the character wouldn’t be much different to that of the original film it would be hard to cast such a unique looking person again.

Well, if reports from August are to be believed - the filmmakers may be bringing him back as a CG creation with Cushing’s likeness. If they do, we hope it at least looks convincing, but don’t you think it might be a little creepy?

Boba Fett

This fits quite naturally. In 'The Empire Strike Back’ the Imperials show they’re not averse to hiring bounty hunters (at least, Vader isn’t) so it’s certainly possible that Fett has worked for the Empire before.

Imagine if the Rebels steal the Death Star plans toward the end of the film’s second act, setting a final third that shows their efforts to get the plans back - with Fett set loose on their tail.

It would offer LucasFilm the chance give the character something to do other than letting a blind man accidentally send him flying into a giant toothy sand vagina.

Rebellion Figureheads

There are a number of small characters who could appear. Of course we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t get excited about the possibility of a young Admiral Ackbar storming a galactic war zone, so that’s who we’d be most excited about.

Wedge Antilles is another possibility. The skilled leader of Rogue Squadron who survived both Death Star attacks and the Battle of Hoth. If ‘Rogue One’ needs a pilot, this could be the guy.

But there’s also Mon Mothma, who does little in the films, but who certainly has potential. We could also see Princess Leia’s adoptive father Bail Organa, one of the founding members of the rebellion.

'Star Wars: Rogue One’ is set for release on 16 December 2016.
