Star Wars gets sexy in Star Wars: A Nude Hope

Star Wars burlesque show transforms the galaxy far, far away

If you thought 'Star Wars' was sexy enough, you'd better think again… as burlesque meets the galaxy far, far away in 'Star Wars: A Nude Hope'.

After 'Return of the Jedi' I think it's safe to say that every young geek remembers Princess Leia in that gold bikini. But it turns out that 'Star Wars' could have been a whole lot sexier. That's right folks - the ladies over at Geekenders are bringing sexy back to the galaxy far, far away with this impressive burlesque show, 'Star Wars: A Nude Hope'.

Born out of a love of both 'Star Wars' and burlesque, 'A Nude Hope' is a retelling of the original 'Star Wars' movie… with a bit of added oomph. Showing at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, it features Obi-Wan Kenobi using the Force to undress a group of cantina dancers and even Han Solo shooting off Greedo's clothes.

I caught up with director (and princess Leia) Fairlith Harvey who explained why she's decided to make sci-fi sexy…

"Why wouldn't someone create a Star Wars burlesque show?" she said… and when you put it like that, it's hard to argue. "I've noticed that when burlesque has a familiar appeal or specific reference, audiences tend to get even more excited… There's almost no one who isn't at least familiar with Star Wars."

Coming from a theatrical background, Fairlith has produced a number of monthly shows that bring her geeky and sexy sides together… and she explained that putting on a big 'Star Wars' show seemed like the next step.

"While thinking of what large theatrical event I wanted to produce, I kept coming back to Star Wars," she said. "There's no pop culture property like it."

But what can you expect from the galaxy's sexiest 'Star Wars' show?

"My favourite number is Super Trouper," she explained, "with the Storm Troopers chasing the heroes through the Death Star and in a slow-motion chase through the audience as well, crawling over people."

I'm sure Jabba is getting all hot and bothered at the thought…

But don't be mistaken - this is no amateur production. And 'Star Wars' fans will likely notice the attention to details that's gone into 'A Nude Hope'.

"The costumes are meticulous. The script is written by Star Wars fans. The numbers were so carefully chosen."

Appearing for a number of encore performance on December 14 and December 15, 'Star Wars: A Nude Hope' is a bawdy retelling of everything 'Star Wars' fans hold dear… and it sounds like an absolute riot.

"I dream of Lando Calrissian doing a burlesque routine to the theme from Shaft," said Fairlith. And I can't help thinking Billy Dee Williams might be interested… he is a bit of a ladies man, after all. Just don't ask Han whether that's a blaster in his pocket - he might just be pleased to see you.
