Star Wars: Should Harrison Ford return for Episode VII?

Harrison Ford could be returning as Han Solo… but is that a good thing?

The announcement of 'Star Wars: Episode VII' has brought plenty of rumours and speculation. Which of our favourite characters will return for the sequels? And just who is going to play them? Well it turns out that Harrison Ford might be back as our favourite wise-cracking smuggler, Han Solo.

In an interview with Fox News Latino, Umberto Gonzalez of the Latino Review broke the galaxy-shattering news. "Back in November, Harrison Ford said he was open to the idea of retuning as Han Solo, but it's official… Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars movie." He goes on to explain that "The deal is done, it's huge. It hasn't been reported anywhere yet."

He's right, of course - the news is huge. Even though it's just a rumour, the fact that Harrison Ford might return as Han Solo is a big deal. A very big deal. But is it really a good thing?

Don't everyone thank me at once

The main problem with the return of Harrison Ford is that, well… he's started to look a bit old. Now I'm not saying that's a bad thing and I have to admit, for a man of seventy, he's still looking pretty cool. But can he still pull off the Han Solo swagger? For one thing, he's a bit too old to be dashing about the galaxy aboard the Millennium Falcon without it just seeming a bit odd. But more importantly, we've already seen how well Harrison Ford copes with an action movie in the last instalment of Indiana Jones. Unfortunately, it's not all that well. On the other hand, there's still a part of me that wants to see him make a triumphant comeback. In the Star Wars universe, he's the King of cool - I just hope that he can still carry that off.

Out with the old, in with the new?

Of course, a lot of this depends on what Han Solo's new role will be in the sequel trilogy. We're yet to find out the storyline of Episode VII and so it's hard to pin down exactly how Han Solo will appear. Will he be the same old wise-cracking smuggler that we know and love? Or will we see a more mature Han in the new films? A lot of this depends on how the overall plot is going to work - if the old cast are picking up where they left off, this might prove a bit trickier. But then, many fans believe that an all-new cast of up and coming actors is the best way forward. If this is the case, could we see our old favourite passing the baton to a new-age of Star Wars characters?

Personally, I think this could be the best way forward for the franchise. It's obvious that Disney are eager to try out new things while retaining some of the old magic that made Star Wars great. While the rumours remain unconfirmed, it's still quite thrilling to think that the original cast might return to our screens. We already know that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and even Ian McDiarmid met with George Lucas last year to discuss the new films - fans have largely speculated that this would result in them reprising their roles as well. So while it's excellent news that we might see Harrison Ford back aboard the Millennium Falcon, I just hope it isn't as a main character.

What do you think of this latest Star Wars rumour? Do you think Harrison Ford should return as Han Solo?
