Steps were concerned the title of their new track 'What the Future Holds' could cause upset due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The group, comprised of members Ian 'H' Watkins, Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Lisa Scott-Lee and Lee Latchford-Evans, weren't sure whether to stick with the song name as their feared it could appear insensitive due to the uncertainty of the situation.

Tozer shared with new! Magazine: "We actually had a big meeting, a massive discussion, asking if it was insensitive to put out a song with the title 'What The Future Holds', knowing the uncertainty of what's going on right now.

"Half of us wanted to continue with it, half of us didn't, but ultimately we decided everyone needs a bit of hope and happiness and so we decided to go ahead."

"We'd hate for anyone to think we'd taken advantage of a bad situation to release a song with a title like that," Richards, 43, shared.

The announcement for the record was delayed due to the pandemic as the band couldn't promote it as intended while the UK went into lockdown.

The song, which has been co-written by Sia, predates the pandemic as the quintet first heard about it over two years ago.

Richards told The Sun: “She wrote the track for herself but realised it wasn’t really for her and gave it to us.

"It’s not like it was in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It was her who said, ‘We should give this to Steps because it would really suit them’.”

It comes as Steps are set to release their sixth studio album of the same name in November.
