Millie Bobby Brown struggled to speak with a British accent for her new Netflix film Enola Holmes, despite being British in real life.

The Stranger Things star portrays Sherlock Holmes’s little sister in the mystery film, with Henry Cavill starring as the detective and Helena Bonham Carter as their mother.

Brown has said the performance was “really challenging” for her, as she was so used to acting with an American accent after years on Stranger Things.

“For the last five years I’ve been playing an American character in Stranger Things and I found it really challenging being British in this, even though I am a Brit,” she told Radio Times.

She continued: “I had to learn how to speak again because I’m so used to speaking in an American accent.”

Brown was born in Spain to British parents, before moving to Bournemouth when she was four. Four years later she and her family moved to Florida in order for her to pursue her acting career.

Since winning the role of Eleven in Stranger Things, Brown, 16, has appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and is now a budding film producer.

Enola Holmes, which arrives on Netflix on 23 September, sparked hilarity last month when eagle-eyed fans spotted a historical error in its poster.

The film’s release has also renewed interest in a lawsuit filed by the Arthur Conan Doyle estate, which argued that it owns the copyright to stories in which Sherlock Holmes is depicted as “emotional”.
