There’s no shortage of deaths in the Game of Thrones universe, but with the final season creeping closer and only a handful of the show’s original characters left standing, we’re out here wondering who-if anyone-is going to survive the battle with the White Walkers.

The issue of whether Jon Snow, who’s had possibly one of the most important story arcs on the show, is going to make it out alive after the last episode airs has been a hot topic of discussion over the past few seasons. There have been some good theories presented on both sides, and we’re about to take a deep dive into both of them.

Why he’s going to live:

One of the biggest clues in the show that Jon is going to come out alive is right in the title of the book A Song of Ice and Fire. Jon, being both a Northern Stark direwolf and a Southern Targaryen dragon, is the perfect embodiment of these two elements. It’s becoming pretty clear that Jon is the main protagonist of the show, and while GoT does have a history of killing off major characters, it seems a little less likely that they’re going to kill off the guy that the whole show is heavily centered on right now.

Also, Jon has technically died once already. Doing it again would be literal overkill.

Why he’s going to die:

So far in the show, Jon has had an unprecedented amount of good luck. He survived Beyond the Wall, got the Wildlings to accept him, nearly lost but then won an insurmountable battle against Ramsay, and told Cersei to her face that he wasn’t going to acknowledge her as queen. Hell, the guy fully died and came back to freakin’ life! If he has a lucky penny or something, he should think about giving his sisters (or should we say cousins?) a turn. The chances that his insanely good luck keeps up seem slim to none in the Game of Thrones universe.

As far as the history of the show goes, being crowned King of the North has essentially been a death sentence. Ned Stark was unceremoniously beheaded and Robb was brutally killed by the Freys at the Red Wedding. If history continues to repeat itself, things aren’t looking so good for Jonny boy.

Show writers have also been told the ending of the books by George R. R. Martin, and assuming they’re sticking to it, Jon has a good chance of dying. The whole premise of Martin’s writing is that it’s an atypical fantasy book where the good guy doesn’t always win and sometimes your favorite character gets brutally murdered. Having the underdog rise up, save the day, and live happily ever after just seems way too soft and cliché for Game of Thrones.
