'Suicide Squad' Star Margot Robbie: ‘You Can Always See a Bit of Dr. Harleen Quinzel in Harley Quinn’

Even though the delightfully deranged Harley Quinn is all over the Suicide Squad trailers, there’s a side of her that we still haven’t seen. In a new promotional interview for the DC film (in theaters Aug. 5), actress Margot Robbie talks about her villain’s civilian alter ego: psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel. Assigned to work with the Joker at Arkham Asylum, the good doctor fell in love with him and was soon pulled into his madness, which is how she became Harley Quinn. In the movie, Robbie promises, “you see the before and after.” Watch the interview above.

In her performance as the baseball bat-wielding, hot-pants-wearing Harley, Robbie wanted to make sure that Dr. Quinzel wasn’t entirely lost. “I didn’t want it to be as if she had a body swap, when her skin got bleached, she suddenly is a totally different person,” Robbie explains. “You can always see a bit of Dr. Harleen Quinzel in Harley Quinn.”

Additionally, Robbie played the movie Harley Quinn as a schizophrenic who hears voices in her head — and “one of her voices is Dr. Quinzel, so she’s always present,” Robbie says.
