Sundance Theater Lab to Develop New Plays by Pulitzer Winners Annie Baker, Doug Wright

New plays by Pulitzer winners Annie Baker and Doug Wright are among the nine in-development stage projects tapped for the Sundance Institute’s 2014 Theater Lab.

Baker, who just picked up the Pulitzer for her play “The Flick,” both writes and directs “The Last of the Little Hours,” about the quotidian life of Benedictine monks. Wright, who took home the 2004 Pulitzer for his play “I Am My Own Wife,” also will helm his own show, “Posterity,” about a sculptor’s sessions with a cantankerous Henrik Ibsen.

The three-week Lab — one of the resident lab programs hosted by Sundance for creatives working on new projects in theater or film — has played a part in developing a number of titles that have gone on to future success, including current Broadway musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation,” and Broadway alums “The Light in the Piazza” and “Spring Awakening.”

Also on the 2014 Lab’s list is “The Good Book,” the latest collaboration from writer-thesp Denis O’Hare (“American Horror Story”) and writer-helmer Lisa Peterson, who previously collaborated on the well-received solo show “An Iliad.” Their new outing looks at organized religion through the eyes of two modern-day characters.

There’s also a new play by Dominique Morrisseau, “Skeleton Crew,” and one from Sheila Callaghan, “Bed,” both from writers who have carved out Off Broadway profiles.

Rounding out this summer’s Sundance roster are “Caught” by Christopher Chen, “Ghost Supper” by Sheila Tousey, “So Go the Ghosts of Mexico, Part Two” by Matthew Paul Olmos and “T.” by Dan Aibel.

The 2014 Lab runs July 7-27 at the Sundance Resort in Utah.
